Questions
Online counselling and EMDR: your questions
Straight answers to what people usually ask before they get in touch. Tap a question to open it.
Will my force or service find out?
Not from me. I don't tell your employer, occupational health or colleagues that you've been in touch. The few limits are on the confidentiality page.
Will this affect my job, firearms authority or vetting?
I can't advise on employment or vetting rules. Your Federation, union or occupational health team can tell you how they work. What you say to me stays with me, within the limits on the confidentiality page.
How much does it cost, and is there a free call?
Counselling sessions are 50 minutes and cost £50. EMDR sessions are 90 minutes and cost £95. The first call is free: 15 minutes, no obligation. More on the fees page.
Do I need a PTSD diagnosis, or a GP referral?
No to both. You can contact me directly. If it seems useful, we can talk about whether your GP or NHS Talking Therapies might help alongside our work.
How does EMDR work over video?
Instead of a light bar or a therapist's hand, you follow guided eye movements on screen, or tap your own shoulders, whichever you prefer. You need a quiet, private space and a steady connection. Headphones aren't essential, but they can help. Sessions run on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp video.
Research suggests therapy by video works about as well as face to face. A review of studies found symptoms improved by a similar amount either way (Norwood and others, 2018), and a 2025 study of 279 veterans having EMDR found similar completion and recovery rates by video and in person (Fairbanks and others, 2025).
Will I have to describe everything that happened?
You stay in control of how much you say. You don't need to describe every detail aloud, although some talking is part of the work, and we go at your pace.
Is online EMDR suitable if I get strong flashbacks?
Sometimes, with careful assessment and preparation first. I'll teach you grounding skills and check EMDR suits you before any processing starts. If something else would help more at this stage, I'll say so.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person. We'll review how things are going regularly and agree together what is possible or likely. EMDR can be very effective and can work quickly, and some clients have felt real relief after a single session. Everyone is different, though, so I can't promise how many sessions you'll need.
What if my shifts change at short notice?
Tell me as soon as you can and we'll find another time. Please give at least 48 hours' notice. With less notice, or if a session is missed, 50% of the session fee is charged. Full details are in my terms.
I'm a veteran. Can you help?
You're welcome. If your difficulties are linked to combat, we'll talk through the right approach first, because NICE's EMDR recommendation is for non-combat trauma. I'll also tell you about specialist services such as Op COURAGE.
Can I use my private health insurance?
Not at the moment. I'm not currently registered with private health insurers, so sessions are self-funded. If cost is a worry, a reduced rate can be agreed for anyone going through difficult financial circumstances. Just ask.
